James Eugene “Hum” Poffenberger, 73, of Williamsport, Md., passed away on Friday, July 18, 2014, at his home.

He was born, May 23, 1941, in Williamsport, Md., to the late James Luther and Goldie Mary Mellott Poffenberger.

He was a 1959 graduate of Williamsport High School.

He was employed by Allegheny Power in Hagerstown, Md., until his retirement. He was previously employed by Mack Trucks of Hagerstown, Md. He was also a former member of the Potomac Edison Forerunners Club

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church, Williamsport, where he previously taught Sunday school.

He was a member of Potomac Post No. 202 American Legion, Williamsport.

He was previously a mentor for Maryland’s Tomorrow and also involved with the Big Brother’s, Hagerstown.

Survivors include sister, Hilda J. Poffenberger of Williamsport; two nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. James was a mentor and good friend to Mike Farrar and his wife, Kim, and Tom Eyler; a grandfather figure to Brianna and Brenden Farrar; and two very close friends, Cathy Wallace and Orpha Stockslager.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy R. Faith and Edna V. Wiley; and one brother, Jackie Poffenberger.

Funeral services will be held at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Susan Boehl officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. on Wednesday for the convenience of family and friends. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport. Military honors will be provided by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 of Hagerstown.
